How the Tulalip Tribes empower.
At the turn of the 21st century, the leadership for the Tulalip Tribes had a vision for a giant leap forward. Specifically, they envisioned what they called a “Technology Leap” to bridge the technology gap between them and neighboring communities, while making tribal lands attractive to businesses and developers.
The Tulalip Tribes turned to Native Network for assistance, establishing a tribally-owned and tribally-operated Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), seeking government grants and funding, and eventually establishing Salish Networks to resell connectivity.
Native Network also helped the tribe establish a pilot program with the Spokane Tribe, offering their expertise and connectivity at wholesale rates. Plans are also in place to offer wholesale services to other remote reservations, meaning the Tulalip Tribes are empowering their own people…by helping other tribes empower themselves.
